Norway’s state wine monopoly Vinmonopolet will put Portuguese sparkling wine on its shelves on 4 November. Its launch page for the November release lists “musserende fra Portugal” alongside Champagne, Brunello di Montalcino, Cabernet Sauvignon-led reds and the annual Christmas beers. The full product list goes up on 30 October at 15:00. Bottles reach the online shop at 08:00 on 4 November and the stores at 10:00. The producer has not yet been named. The specification it had to meet has been public since December, though, and it shows exactly what Norway asked Portugal for: a dry, bottle-fermented Bairrada sparkling wine for the basis range, the selection that every one of Vinmonopolet’s stores can stock.

What the tender asked for

The wine comes from Vinmonopolet’s launch plan for the second half of 2026, published on 1 December 2025. The plan is a tender document. Norwegian importers submit samples from their producers against each specification, and the monopoly’s tasting panel judges them before it buys. Specification 202611012 was the only Portuguese line for November:

The specification is precise. The 40% floor on bical (the region’s white grape) and baga (its red grape, often pressed white for sparkling wine) excludes base wines built mainly on chardonnay or pinot noir. The 18 months on the lees and the extra-brut sugar limit rule out the fruit-forward, tank-method style that makes up much of Portugal’s cheaper sparkling wine. At up to NOK 360, roughly €31, the wine is priced just above the cheaper of the two Champagnes in the same month, which is capped at NOK 350.

One of five sparkling wines in November

November is Vinmonopolet’s sparkling-wine month, and the Bairrada slot sits in a short list. The plan asked for five sparkling wines for the month: one from New Zealand’s South Island (under NOK 375), two Champagnes (under NOK 350 and under NOK 800), the Bairrada (under NOK 360) and a German wine from the Nahe, Pfalz or Rheinhessen (under NOK 300). Across the whole half-year plan, Portugal had three of the 55 specifications. The other two were July’s Minho Alvarinho in a 1.5-litre pouch and a red Vinho Verde with at most 20% vinhão, both covered in NorthSouth HQ’s report on the 1 July launch. France had eight specifications and Italy six.

A gap on the Norwegian shelf

The new wine fills a real gap. On 26 October Vinmonopolet’s product database listed 954 Portuguese products, down from 973 in NorthSouth HQ’s September shelf census. Of these, 28 are sparkling wines. Twenty-seven sit in the bestillingsutvalget, the order range that stores bring in only on request. The one sparkling wine tagged to the basis range, Provam’s Côto de Mamoelas Alvarinho Bruto 2020, now carries the status “utgått”, meaning it has been discontinued. Until the November wine arrives, Portugal therefore has no active sparkling wine on the shelf that every store can carry.

The order range shows that Bairrada houses are already active in Norway. Five of the 28 sparkling wines carry the Beira Atlântico tag that Vinmonopolet uses for Bairrada: two from Geographic Wines’ La Volée range, a rosé and a brut from Caves São João, and Kompassus’ Grande Reserva Blanc de Noirs 2016 at NOK 525.70. Filipa Pato’s 3B Rosé is also listed. Minho accounts for ten of the sparkling wines and Távora-Varosa for three. Which producer won the basis slot, and through which Norwegian importer, will be known on 30 October.

Sweden is moving the same way

Systembolaget’s database shows a similar trend. Sweden’s monopoly lists 35 Portuguese sparkling wines, and only one is in its fixed range: Casa de Sarmento’s Branco Bruto, a Bairrada blend of chardonnay, arinto and baga at SEK 149, imported by Boa Pressão AB. Three more have arrived in October. Campolargo’s Bairrada Brut Rosé (pinot noir, SEK 259) entered the temporary range on 2 October. Tubarão’s Pet Nat (SEK 239) followed on 16 October. Today, 26 October, Vadio’s Perpetuum Sparkling Brut NV becomes available to order at SEK 380 through Verum Vinum AB. Vadio already sells a baga-based Bairrada rosé sparkling wine in Sweden.

The bigger Swedish volume is still to come. As NorthSouth HQ reported earlier this month, Systembolaget’s December plan asks for a white tank-method sparkling wine from the IG Beira Atlântico at up to SEK 99 for roughly 450 stores, with a 180,000-litre minimum. The two monopolies are asking for opposite ends of the category. Norway wants a premium, lees-aged traditional-method wine for its basis range. Sweden wants a volume wine at an entry price. As of today the winning Swedish wine does not yet appear in Systembolaget’s public database, where the latest dated Portuguese launch is 13 November.

The next Norwegian window: the Azores

The pipeline after November is thin. Vinmonopolet’s launch plan for the first half of 2027, published on 1 June, contains one Portuguese specification out of 56. It is a January white from the Azores, at least 90% verdelho and/or arinto dos Açores, priced under NOK 450 and judged for depth and a “saline, mineral” character, for the basis range with a possible one-lot purchase. The offer deadline was 20 August. France has 13 lines in that plan, Italy seven, Germany five and Spain four. For Portuguese producers the conclusion is plain: in Norway’s tendered ranges, Portugal wins one or two narrowly defined slots a season. Each slot asks for a specific regional style, and the Bairrada sparkling wine is one of them.

What to watch

The 4 November list, out on 30 October, will name the Bairrada producer and its importer, along with any other Portuguese wines in the release. Systembolaget’s December sparkling wine should appear in its database in the coming weeks. Vinmonopolet’s launch plan for the second half of 2027 is due around 1 December. Portuguese wineries already listed with the Nordic monopolies are in the directory of Portuguese companies in the Nordics, and Nordic companies active in Portugal are in the directory of Nordic companies in Portugal.
