Corridor footprint

Caves São João began in 1920 as a family business trading fine Douro wines and liqueurs from Anadia, in the heart of the Bairrada. When the 1930s rules restricting port production to Vila Nova de Gaia closed that route, the Costa family turned to Bairrada table wines, and at the end of the 1950s created Frei João — one of the region’s best-known brands — followed by Porta dos Cavaleiros from the neighbouring Dão. The house later bought Quinta do Poço do Lobo, roughly 37 hectares at Pocariça in Cantanhede, giving it estate fruit to sit alongside its long tradition of aged reserves and traditional-method sparkling wines.

The Norwegian channel runs through Oslo-area importer Silves Vinho Group AS. Vinmonopolet’s order range (bestillingsutvalget) already carried the Bairrada Espumante Bruto — a Bical- and Maria Gomes-led blend with 18 months on lees, art. 18707201, listed at NOK 255.40 — and the monopoly’s 2 September 2026 launch list added a second cuvée, São João Rosé Reserva Brut 2023 (art. 20986901) at NOK 265, one of 65 Portuguese products entering the order range that day.

Why this matters for the corridor

Bairrada’s high-acid, traditional-method sparkling wines are a distinctive Portuguese answer to Nordic demand for food-friendly fizz at prices below Champagne, and the monopoly order range is where that category is being built one cuvée at a time. Caves São João now has two of them in Norway, joining Bairrada neighbours such as Campolargo and Quinta das Bágeiras — a century-old family house using the same importer-led route that the region’s newer producers rely on.
