Kompassus is a boutique winery in Bairrada, with vineyards at Cordinhã in the municipality of Cantanhede. Its owner, João Póvoa — an ophthalmologist by profession and a farmer by passion — began making wine in 1991 under the Quinta de Baixo name and adopted the Kompassus brand in 2005. The project is built around Baga, the region’s signature grape, much of it from old vines over 70 years of age, with a minimal-intervention, roots-and-tradition philosophy.
Since 2012 the oenology has been guided by Anselmo Mendes, one of Portugal’s most respected white-wine specialists, working with resident winemaker Magda Costa. Kompassus’s link to the corridor is concrete: its Baga Vinhas Velhas Reserva is listed by Vinmonopolet, Norway’s state monopoly (article 19675801), placing a small Bairrada producer directly on Norwegian shelves.
Boutique volumes and a monopoly listing are an unusual but powerful combination: Vinmonopolet’s curated range gives a tiny producer like Kompassus access to a high-purchasing-power market it could never reach store-by-store.
