Portuguese presence in the Nordics

Freire Lobo

Wine

Freire Lobo is a family wine estate in Oliveira do Hospital, in the Dão, trading since 2014 as Freire Lobo, Unipessoal Lda (NIF 513250115) and run by winemaker Elisa Freire Lobo. It works only with native Dão varieties from vineyards at 560–600 metres and sells under the VIGNO label. Norway’s Vinmonopolet carries five VIGNO wines in its order range, imported by Garage d’Or AS.

Corridor footprint

The estate trades through Freire Lobo, Unipessoal Lda (NIF 513250115), a single-member company incorporated on 29 September 2014 with its seat in Oliveira do Hospital and viticulture (CAE 01210) as its main activity; racius holds its accounts from 2014 to 2024. An older family company, Safrel – Sociedade Agrícola da Casa Freire Lobo, Lda (NIF 501244093, Gramaços), is also registered in the municipality. Freire Lobo says it works exclusively with Dão grapes — Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen, Tinta Roriz, Alvarelhão, Baga, Tinto Cão and Rufete for reds; Encruzado, Cerceal, Bical, Fernão Pires and Barcelo for whites — from vineyards at 560 to 600 metres, fermenting with indigenous yeasts and using stone lagares. The range is sold as Freire Lobo VIGNO: Branco, Encruzado Branco, Tinto and Reserva Tinto, plus Granite Terroir Blend bottlings.

In Norway, Vinmonopolet’s product data name Freire Lobo as producer and Garage d’Or AS as wholesaler for five wines, all active in the order range (bestillingsutvalget) in October 2026: VIGNO Dão Tinto 2023 (art. 15566701, NOK 269), Vigno Granite Terroir Blend Dão Tinto 2022 (art. 15566801, NOK 314), Vigno Encruzado Dão 2020 (art. 15566901, NOK 289), Vigno Granite Terroir Blend Dão Branco 2020 (art. 15567001, NOK 289) and Vigno Dão Rosé 2025 (art. 20566501, NOK 269). Distribution runs through Vinhuset AS in Oslo, and Vinmonopolet tags all five as sustainability-certified.

Why this matters for the corridor

A five-wine block for a 15-hectare estate is unusually deep for a small Dão grower in the Norwegian monopoly, where most Portuguese producers hold one or two lines. It shows that a single committed importer can carry a full range, from entry red to Encruzado and terroir bottlings, through the order assortment. Freire Lobo sits alongside other small Dão names in Vinmonopolet, such as No Rules Wines (Portal da Estrela) and the Adega Cooperativa de Silgueiros.
