Universal Robots is the Danish company that created the collaborative-robot (cobot) market. Founded in Odense in 2005 and owned since 2015 by US-listed Teradyne, it has shipped more than 75,000 cobots worldwide and reaches Portuguese manufacturers through Universal Robots Iberia and an authorised local distributor network.
Universal Robots invented the cobot category with the 2008 launch of its first commercially viable collaborative robot, and now sells a full range — the UR3e, UR5e, UR10e, UR16e, UR20 and UR30 — used across automotive, electronics, metalworking, plastics and food plants. In Portugal it goes to market through Universal Robots Iberia and an authorised Portuguese distributor and integrator network, including Stockfer Robótica, which sells, deploys and services UR arms on Portuguese factory floors.
Portugal is a natural fit for the technology. Its industrial base — the Autoeuropa-anchored automotive-components cluster, moulds and plastics, electronics, footwear and food processing — is exactly the high-mix, labour-sensitive manufacturing where cobots repay their cost fastest. Ownership by Nasdaq-listed Teradyne since 2015 gives UR the balance sheet, financing options and partner ecosystem to support Iberian customers at scale.
Universal Robots is one of the clearest cases of Danish deep-tech embedding itself in Portuguese industry — not a sales office shipping boxes, but an automation platform reshaping how Portuguese factories compete on cost and flexibility. As Portugal works to climb the manufacturing value chain, Nordic automation vendors like UR are both enablers and beneficiaries of that shift.
