Trustly

Open-Banking Payments

Swedish open-banking payments pioneer founded in Stockholm in 2008. In 2019 Trustly opened a dedicated tech hub in Lisbon at Avenida 5 de Outubro 125 (1050-052), then a flagship of the company’s push to grow engineering and product capacity outside Sweden. The Lisbon site hosts multiple cross-functional product, engineering and platform teams supporting Trustly’s global Pay-by-Bank network.

Corridor footprint

Trustly opened its Lisbon hub in 2019 as part of a deliberate move to scale engineering and product capacity outside Sweden, with founder-CTO leadership describing Lisbon’s combination of tech talent, affordability and cultural fit as the deciding factors. The hub started with a small core of tech teams and has since become one of Trustly’s primary product-engineering nodes outside Stockholm, with hybrid roles posted across software architecture, platform engineering and quality.

Operationally, the Lisbon site supports Trustly’s account-to-account payments network (Pay-by-Bank, instant payouts, refunds) used by merchants, marketplaces, gaming operators and financial-service customers across Europe and North America. Trustly’s Iberian commercial reach into Portuguese banks and merchants is supported by the same regional team.

Why this matters for the corridor

Trustly is one of the most visible cases of a Swedish fintech using Lisbon not as a sales outpost but as a core engineering and product hub. The 2019 opening pre-dated the wave of Stockholm-based fintechs (including Klarna) building Iberian dev capacity, making it a useful reference point for Nordic founders mapping Iberian talent and operating costs.

Recent activity

2023–2025: Trustly continues to scale its global open-banking footprint with new market launches and partnership announcements; the Lisbon hub remains active in hiring across engineering and product.
