Nordic presence in Portugal

Topsoe

Green Hydrogen

Topsoe is a Danish process-engineering and catalyst-technology company — a global leader in catalysis, ammonia synthesis (Haber-Bosch) and SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell) green-hydrogen technology. Operates Europe’s largest SOEC factory in Herning, Denmark, and has an active Iberian project pipeline tied to the corridor’s green-molecules build-out.

Corridor footprint

Topsoe is one of the structurally most important Danish industrial-technology players in the energy transition. Its catalysts sit inside ammonia plants worldwide; its SOEC technology is positioned as the most efficient route to green hydrogen for high-temperature industrial applications. The Herning factory in Denmark is the EU’s largest industrial-scale SOEC manufacturing site, currently producing 500 MW of SOECs per year with room to scale to 1.5 GW.

Topsoe’s Iberian exposure runs primarily through Spanish and Portuguese green-molecules projects: Forestal del Atlántico’s 55 MW SOEC e-methanol plant in Galicia (FID expected Q2 2026) is the most concrete Iberian win to date. Across the wider corridor, Topsoe’s catalyst and process-engineering technology is referenced in the broader Sines hydrogen-and-ammonia value chain that includes the CIP-backed MadoquaPower2X project (engineered by NextChem) and the Repsol Sines biomethane and hydrogen ramp.

Why this matters for the corridor

For Portuguese green-molecules developers and Iberian industrial decarbonisation projects, Topsoe represents one of the most credible Nordic technology partners on offer — particularly as Portugal’s industrial decarbonisation roadmap moves from announcement to FID phase. Watch for Topsoe references inside any future Sines, Setúbal or Aveiro green-hydrogen FID announcements.
