Corridor footprint

Sonae Indústria built one of Europe’s largest wood-based panels businesses, producing particleboard, MDF and OSB used across the furniture and construction industries. Headquartered in Maia, near Porto, it is listed on Euronext Lisbon and today runs its panels operations largely through Sonae Arauco, a joint venture with the Chilean forestry group Arauco.

IKEA’s manufacturing arm, Swedwood, has long been a customer for Portuguese-made wood panels — the raw material of flat-pack furniture. That relationship places a Portuguese industrial group inside the value chain of one of Scandinavia’s most globally recognised brands, complementing the broader role Portugal’s furniture cluster plays as a supplier to the Nordic flat-pack economy.

Why this matters for the corridor

Sonae Indústria illustrates the industrial depth behind the Portugal-to-Nordics corridor. Beyond finished goods, Portugal supplies the engineered-wood materials that Nordic furniture brands depend on — an upstream, business-to-business link that rarely makes headlines but underpins a great deal of “Scandinavian” furniture.
