Sonae Arauco is a global wood-based panels producer formed by the merger of Sonae Indústria (Portugal) and Arauco (Chile). Operates 11 industrial units and 12 wood-recycling centres across nine countries with around 2,600 employees and 2024 turnover of approximately €830 million.
Sonae Arauco produces particleboard, MDF, decorative panels and AGEPAN-branded wood-fibre construction products from a vertically integrated industrial base in Portugal, Spain, Germany and South Africa. Its Portuguese flagship is the Mangualde plant, which has more than 200 employees, around 360,000 m³ of annual production capacity and turnover of roughly €80 million. In 2024-2025 the site brought online the world’s first industrial-scale fibreboard recycling line, an €8 million investment that allows up to 20% of recycled MDF fibres to be reintegrated into new MDF/HDF panels.
Across the wider Sonae Arauco panel business, more than 70% of the wood used in particleboard ranges is already recycled, and the company is investing in a new wood-fibre insulation line at its Meppen (Germany) site to expand the AGEPAN SYSTEM construction range from 2025. Panels and decorative surfaces from these plants flow into European furniture and DIY supply chains — including Nordic furniture brands and Scandinavian construction-products distributors that depend on Iberian and German MDF and particleboard volumes.
Sonae Arauco is one of Portugal’s most concrete industrial export bridges into Northern European furniture and construction. The Mangualde recycled-fibre line is a structural advantage in markets like Sweden and Finland, where Nordic furniture brands and big-box DIY chains have aggressive recycled-content targets. For Nordic procurement teams tracking circular wood-panel supply, the Sonae Arauco-Mangualde plant is a reference site for what scaled MDF circularity actually looks like.
