Corridor footprint

Sandvik’s Portugal presence is concentrated in the mining sector, where the company supplies critical underground equipment and automation systems to the Iberian Pyrite Belt and other mining operations. The primary operational footprint is at Neves-Corvo, Portugal’s largest copper and tin mine, where Sandvik has deployed its AutoMine® Multi Lite automation system to enable remote-operated loaders and trucks, significantly enhancing productivity and safety margins in underground operations.

In 2024, Sandvik received a major equipment order from Almina Minas do Alentejo S.A. worth approximately SEK 340 million, including Toro TH663i trucks, Toro LH621i loaders, rock bolters, and longhole drills equipped with AutoMine® Fleet automation. Deliveries began in Q3 2024 and continue through 2025, with the equipment destined to help Almina double its current production capacity. Following full deployment, Almina is expected to operate one of the largest Sandvik fleets in Europe.

Why this matters for the corridor

Sandvik’s role in Portugal exemplifies how Swedish industrial engineering drives productivity gains in the European mining sector. The deployment of AutoMine® automation systems at Portuguese mines reduces operational risk, improves ore extraction margins, and positions Nordic capital goods suppliers as essential partners in modernizing Portugal’s mining infrastructure. This is a corridor of embedded Swedish technology and expertise.
