Family-owned salt-cod group founded in Tondela in 1981 that controls its raw material at source through two fish companies it owns in Andenes, above the Arctic Circle in Norway.
Rui Costa e Sousa & Irmão (RCSI) was founded in Tondela in 1981 by Rui Costa e Sousa and his brother Sérgio and traces its roots to 1929 through the acquisition of Brites, Vaz & Irmãos, which runs two production units in Gafanha da Nazaré. The operating company is Rui Costa e Sousa & Irmão, S.A. (NIF 501356282, 3460-594 Tondela), held by Rui Costa e Sousa & Irmão, SGPS, S.A. (NIF 506474879). In a September 2025 interview with Diário de Aveiro, the group described itself as vertically integrated, with about 500 staff and companies in Portugal, Norway, Brazil and the United States.
In Norway the group owns ANDENES FISKEMOTTAK AS (org. no. 995498278, founded 8 April 2010, 17 employees) and ANDØYA FISHERIES AS (org. no. 996082261, founded 1 September 2010), both at Hamnegata 69 in Andenes. According to the group, Andenes Fiskemottak is a fish-reception plant and Andøya Fisheries a splitting and salting unit. Both are VAT-registered, registered in the Brønnøysund register under wholesale of fish (NACE 46.322) and chaired by Rui Manuel Fernandes da Costa e Sousa, with Sergio Manuel Fernandes da Costa e Sousa on both boards; Andenes Fiskemottak is audited by KPMG AS.
Norway is the origin of the North Atlantic cod that Portugal’s salt-cod industry depends on. RCSI is one of the few Portuguese processors that own receiving and salting capacity at the source, which the group says gives it traceability from capture to the consumer.
