Corridor footprint

Rohde Nielsen A/S, the Copenhagen-based dredging contractor, has made Portugal one of its recurring markets. Under a maintenance dredging contract with APFF — Administração do Porto da Figueira da Foz running from September 2020 to March 2023, its hopper dredgers kept the port’s access channels open, and in 2021 the Idun R delivered 160,000 m³ of sand to renourish Figueira da Foz beaches eroded by winter storms. In 2022 the company’s TSHDs Brage R and Thor R, assisted by Rimfaxe R, completed a 450,000 m³ dredging campaign at the Port of Aveiro.

The relationship has deepened since: the company’s new diesel-electric trailing suction hopper dredger Hermod R took its first assignment in November 2025 on a major Portuguese coastal protection project, placing over 3.3 million m³ of sand to rebuild eroded beaches before being formally named in April 2026.

Why this matters for the corridor

Portugal’s Atlantic coastline faces chronic erosion, and its ports need continuous maintenance dredging — work that repeatedly goes to specialist Nordic marine contractors through public tenders.
