Quinta do Ameal is a 30-hectare estate in the Lima Valley of the Vinho Verde region dating back to 1710, with about 14 hectares of vineyard, 8 hectares of walnut, chestnut and pine forest and more than 800 metres of Lima riverbank, and has belonged to the Esporão group since 2019. Its Loureiro wines — Ameal Loureiro, Ameal Solo Único and Ameal Reserva — are grown on deep granite soils at 12 to 53 metres of altitude, and the estate runs a wine-tourism operation with accommodation, visits and tastings. In Sweden, Systembolaget lists Ameal Loureiro 2023 (art. 7873801, SEK 175) in its order range through Handpicked Wines Sweden AB, with Esporão S.A. as the registered producer.
Quinta do Ameal is the Vinho Verde estate of the Esporão group, Portugal’s best-known Alentejo producer, which added the Lima Valley property to its Alentejo and Douro (Quinta dos Murças) holdings in 2019. Esporão describes Ameal as an ancient estate dating back to 1710 spanning 30 hectares, of which roughly 14 are vineyard and 8 forest of walnut, chestnut and umbrella pine, with more than 800 metres of frontage on the Lima river; altitudes of 12 to 53 metres, deep fertile granite soils and the valley climate are the basis for Loureiro whites with, in the group’s words, outstanding ageing potential. Three wines carry the estate name — Ameal Loureiro, Ameal Solo Único and Ameal Reserva — and the estate also operates a tourism unit with accommodation, winery visits, tastings and outdoor activities.
The Nordic channel is Sweden’s monopoly. Systembolaget’s product database lists Ameal Loureiro 2023 (article 7873801, 75 cl, SEK 175) in the order range, added on 28 April 2025, with Esporão S.A. as producer and Handpicked Wines Sweden AB, one of the largest Portuguese-focused importers on the Swedish market, as supplier. NorthSouth HQ’s September census of the monopoly’s Portuguese shelf counted 73 Vinho Verde lines among 579 Portuguese products, with Handpicked the second-largest importer of Portuguese wine after Vänersborgs Vinagentur.
Loureiro from the Lima Valley is a category Nordic buyers have been slow to discover compared with Alvarinho from Monção and Melgaço, and Ameal is the reference estate for it. Its route to Sweden through the Esporão portfolio shows how Portugal’s larger groups carry smaller regional estates into monopoly listings that the estates could not easily win alone — the same portfolio logic that put Quinta dos Murças and Esporão’s Alentejo wines on Nordic shelves.
