Quinta da Alorna is a 2,800-hectare estate on the south bank of the Tagus at Almeirim (2080-187), in the Tejo region, that has belonged to the Lopo de Carvalho family for five generations and takes its name from D. Pedro de Almeida, first Marquis of Alorna, who held it in 1723. Its wine company, Quinta da Alorna Vinhos Lda (NIF 503687707), farms 160–180 hectares of vines and has four wines in Systembolaget’s order range through Vinovum AB, all listed in November–December 2024.
Quinta da Alorna is one of the larger private agricultural estates in the Tejo valley, and wine is only part of it. The company’s own description gives 2,800 hectares split between 160–180 hectares of vineyard, 500 hectares of irrigated land that grows maize, potatoes for Matutano, peanuts for PepsiCo, peas for Dardico and sweet potato under contract for the food industry, and about 1,900 hectares of cork-oak, stone-pine and eucalyptus forest, plus six solar plants on the property. The estate’s name goes back to D. Pedro de Almeida, viceroy in Goa, whom King João V made first Marquis of Alorna; in 1723 the property was still known as Quinta de Vale de Nabais. It passed through the Counts of Junqueira and a public auction to Dr Manuel Caroça, whose descendants, the Lopo de Carvalho family, are now in their fifth generation of ownership and, in the company’s words, in the middle of a generational transition.
The Swedish listing is recent and deliberately broad. Between 20 November and 2 December 2024 Systembolaget added four Alorna wines to its order range through the importer Vinovum AB: an Alvarinho & Viognier Reserva 2021 at SEK 150, a Sauvignon Blanc 2023 and a Verdelho 2023 at SEK 130, and a Touriga Nacional 2022 at SEK 130. Three whites and one red, three of them from grapes that are unusual for a Portuguese producer on the Swedish shelf, read as a positioning exercise: Alorna is presenting the Tejo as a source of fresh, varietal wines at everyday prices rather than as a Douro substitute.
Tejo is under-represented in the Nordic monopolies compared with the Douro, Alentejo and Vinho Verde, and a family estate with the scale and the forestry and food-industry income of Alorna can afford to build a market slowly. Four order-range listings in one fortnight give Vinovum a full range to sell to restaurants and to test for a fixed-assortment tender, and give Portuguese Tejo producers a benchmark for what a Swedish entry looks like.
