Novonesis is the Danish biosolutions leader created on 29 January 2024 by the merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen. Headquartered in the Copenhagen area and listed on Nasdaq Copenhagen, it employs around 11,000 people and supplies enzymes, cultures and microbial solutions to more than 30 industries — serving Portugal’s food, beverage and agriculture sectors commercially.
Novonesis serves the Portuguese market commercially, supplying microbial cultures, enzymes and other biosolutions to food, dairy, baking, beverage and agriculture customers. Its predecessor companies — Chr. Hansen and Novozymes — have long provided dairy cultures and industrial enzymes used by Portuguese food and wine producers.
Rather than a publicly disclosed Portuguese production site, Novonesis reaches the market through its commercial and technical organisation, embedding its ingredients in the supply chains of Portuguese manufacturers and farmers.
As food, agriculture and industrial biotech decarbonise, Novonesis’s enzymes and cultures become increasingly strategic inputs for Portuguese industry — a quieter but structurally important strand of the Denmark–Portugal relationship.
