Nelo, operated by M.A.R. Kayaks Lda, is the Vila do Conde manufacturer that has become the world’s dominant maker of Olympic canoe-sprint and kayak boats. Founded in 1977 by former paddler Manuel Ramos, it has been the Official Provider in Canoe Sprint for the Olympic Games since Athens 2004, and its boats — raced by the great majority of top nations, the Nordic flatwater powers among them — have collected well over 100 Olympic medals.
From a garage start in 1977, Nelo has grown into the default boat of elite flatwater racing, building from a 20,000 m² facility in Vila do Conde opened in 2017. It has been the Olympic Games’ official canoe-sprint provider since Athens 2004, and at major world and continental championships more than three-quarters of the boats on the water are Nelos — a level of category dominance few manufacturers in any sport can match.
That near-universal adoption is the corridor link. The Nordic countries are among the world’s strongest canoe-sprint nations — Denmark, Norway and Sweden are perennial presences in World Championship and Olympic finals — and they sit squarely within the federation customer base that races Nelo equipment. A Portuguese manufacturer effectively equips the Scandinavian flatwater programmes alongside the rest of the global top tier.
Nelo is a rare case of a Portuguese company owning a global niche outright, exporting precision-built sports equipment to the world’s best — the Nordic federations included. It is Direction B in its purest form: winning in Scandinavia (and everywhere else) on product, not price.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, athletes racing Nelo boats won 19 of the 30 available canoe-sprint medals. In January 2025, Nelo CEO Manuel Alberto Ramos hosted press at the Vila do Conde plant, underscoring the company’s tally of more than 90 medals across the last six Olympic editions.
