Douro wine and wine-tourism company built around the Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias in the Távora valley, bought in 2018 by the Canada-based, German-born surgeon Christoph Kranemann. Operated by Kranemann Estates, Lda (NIF 513744428), it launched with a €12 million first-phase investment, and its Ponte do Fumo Tinta Barroca has been in Systembolaget’s order range since November 2025.
The Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias is one of the oldest estates in the Douro, named after a convent whose origins date to the 12th century, in the valley of the Távora, a southern tributary of the Douro in the municipality of Tabuaço. Christoph Kranemann, a German-born surgeon who practises in Canada and is married to a Portuguese, discovered the property in 2018 and bought it; in July 2019 he launched Kranemann Wine Estates with a first-phase investment of €12 million in DOC Douro wines, Port and wine tourism, and a commitment to at least 50 direct jobs, according to Grande Consumo. The plan includes restoring the convent building as a hotel.
The estate has 150 hectares of vineyards at altitudes of 320 to 420 metres on schist and granite, facing north and north-east — a cool site by Douro standards — planted with Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca for reds and a white field led by Viosinho and Rabigato. Winemaking takes place in a winery built in 2005 and was placed under Diogo Lopes at launch. The operating company, Kranemann Estates, Lda (NIF 513744428, €500,000 share capital), is registered at the estate in Távora. In Sweden, Systembolaget added the Kranemann Estates Ponte do Fumo Tinta Barroca (art. 7666001, SEK 799) to its order range on 17 November 2025, imported by V Import AB.
Kranemann Estates belongs to a wave of foreign-funded Douro projects that position themselves at the top of the price ladder, and its entry into Sweden at SEK 799 a bottle is typical of how such producers approach the Nordic monopolies: a single high-end single-varietal in the order range through a specialist importer, rather than a volume listing. It is a test of whether the monopoly channel can carry premium Douro still wine, a category in which Port houses have so far done most of the work.
