Nordic presence in Portugal

Kongsberg

Defence & Maritime Tech

Kongsberg Gruppen is a Norwegian high-technology group serving defence, aerospace, offshore and maritime customers. In Portugal, Kongsberg Maritime has supplied fuelling-at-sea (FAS) and replenishment-at-sea (RAS) equipment to Portuguese Navy replenishment vessels, and its multibeam sonar systems are operated on the river Douro and at Portuguese ports.

Corridor footprint

Kongsberg Maritime has a named contract with STM to supply FAS and RAS equipment for two Portuguese Navy replenishment vessels — an industrial anchor for the Norwegian group in the Portuguese naval programme. Its GeoSwath Plus shallow-water multibeam sonar has been deployed on the river Douro by Lagoa do Ruivo Survey (LRS), one of Portugal’s leading hydrographic survey firms, giving Kongsberg a real-world operational reference in Portuguese inland and coastal surveying.

Kongsberg’s restructuring — splitting Kongsberg Maritime from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Kongsberg Discovery — will surface as two listed Oslo Exchange entities, and both sides of the group have Portuguese customers tied into the corridor. Defence & Aerospace’s Joint Strike Missile and Naval Strike Missile footprint in NATO naval procurement is the next logical conversation with the Portuguese Navy.

Why this matters for the corridor

Kongsberg is one of the cleanest Norwegian references inside Portuguese naval procurement. As the Portuguese Armed Forces modernise and as Sines becomes a focal point for Atlantic naval logistics, Kongsberg’s FAS/RAS and sonar positions give Norway a durable industrial-political handle on the Portuguese defence conversation.
