Karnov Group is a Danish-Swedish legal, tax and regulatory information group listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. It became a significant player in Portugal in late 2022, acquiring Wolters Kluwer’s carved-out legal-information business in Spain, Portugal and France — taking 100% of the Portuguese entity — in a deal worth around €160 million.
Karnov’s Portuguese presence dates to its 2022 acquisition of the carved-out legal-information businesses of Wolters Kluwer in Spain, Portugal and France (and Thomson Reuters in Spain), a roughly €160 million transaction that closed on 30 November 2022. The deal handed Karnov 100% of Wolters Kluwer’s Portuguese legal-publishing entity, giving Portuguese law firms, in-house counsel and tax advisors access to Karnov’s databases, analytical tools and professional-education offering.
The acquisition transformed Karnov from a Nordic-focused legal-information leader into a genuinely Southern-European player, with Portugal and Spain now core markets alongside its Danish and Swedish home base. The group has been consolidating the acquired Iberian operations onto its platform.
Karnov is a clean example of Nordic capital and intellectual property buying into Portugal’s professional-services market. Legal-information infrastructure is sticky and recurring-revenue by nature, so a Nordic owner of Portugal’s legal databases is a durable corridor fixture rather than a passing investment.
