Corridor footprint

JYSK is a Danish home-furnishings chain founded by Lars Larsen in Aarhus in 1979 and today one of the largest retail groups in Scandinavia, with more than 3,000 stores worldwide. In Portugal, JYSK operates over 30 stores spread across the country, covering Lisbon, Porto, Algarve and the main regional cities, with a catalogue that mixes Scandinavian-style furniture, bedding and home textiles aimed at the mid-market consumer.

In 2025 JYSK went beyond pure retail and opened a dedicated digital & tech hub in the Lisbon area to support its European e-commerce platform and internal IT operations, backed by a publicly announced investment of around €20 million. The hub hires software engineers, product managers and e-commerce specialists to serve the group's pan-European business, plugging Portuguese tech talent directly into a Nordic retailer's core technology stack.

Why this matters

JYSK is the clearest example of a Danish retailer using Portugal as more than a consumer market: first as a growing store network, then as an engineering base for its entire European digital operation. For the Portugal ↔ Scandinavia corridor it signals a shift from pure commercial expansion toward the back-office and technology functions that Nordic retailers are increasingly choosing to site in Lisbon.
