Corridor footprint

Founded in 1834, José Maria da Fonseca is Portugal’s oldest producer of table wine and one of the country’s most iconic wineries, still run by the founding family (the Soares Franco branch). Its Swedish market presence is structural: Periquita was launched on Systembolaget in 1979 and has remained one of the best-known Portuguese wines in Sweden ever since, with a whole portfolio of JMF references on shelf — including Periquita Original, Periquita Reserva, the Amigo Syrah everyday line, and aged Moscatel expressions such as the José Maria da Fonseca Alambre 20 Years (Systembolaget item 9589302).

Why this matters for the corridor

Few Portuguese brands have a longer or deeper Nordic relationship than JMF. The house’s 45+ years on Systembolaget make it one of the rare Portuguese wine producers with a structural, multi-SKU footprint in the Nordic monopoly system — a commercial moat that new entrants find extremely hard to replicate. For Nordic sommeliers, importers and monopoly buyers, JMF is the reference point for both Setúbal Moscatel and approachable Portuguese table reds.
