Portuguese presence in the Nordics

José Maria da Fonseca

Wine

José Maria da Fonseca is one of the world’s oldest table-wine producers, founded in 1834 in Azeitão and still run by the Soares Franco family. Its Periquita has been listed at Sweden’s Systembolaget since 1979, and Sweden is the house’s second-largest market after Brazil.

Corridor footprint

José Maria da Fonseca’s flagship Periquita has been a continuous presence on Sweden’s Systembolaget shelves since 1979 — one of the longest-running Portuguese listings in the Swedish monopoly. The house also supplies its Alambre Moscatel de Setúbal fortified wines and a range of Periquita tiers (Original, Reserva, Superior) into the Swedish market.

With Sweden ranked as its second most important export market after Brazil, the Systembolaget relationship is strategic rather than incidental for the company, underpinning decades of brand-building among Swedish consumers.

Why this matters for the corridor

A 45-year continuous listing in a Nordic state monopoly is exactly the kind of durable distribution win that defines successful Portugal→Nordics expansion — proof that patient brand work inside the Systembolaget system can compound into a top-tier export market.
