J. Caetano & Filhas Lda has been making clothes in the Sousa valley textile belt east of Porto for more than fifty years. From its plant on Rua da Castiça in Paredes, in the municipality of Penafiel, it produces shirts, blouses, dresses, skirts, shorts, jackets and trousers in both woven and knitted fabrics, working across cotton, viscose, lyocell, linen, wool, silk, polyamide, stretch and technical fibres. The company positions itself in two segments: casual garments finished through a local network of washing, garment-dyeing, embroidery and printing partners, and performance garments that use taped seams, quilting, laser cutting and bonding for demanding outdoor use. It holds BSCI, GOTS and GRS certifications and, according to Fenix Outdoor’s supplier list, also runs a second sewing unit, Norv Tex, in Casablanca.
The Nordic link is documented by the customers themselves. Fenix Outdoor International — the Swiss-listed, Swedish-rooted owner of Fjällräven, Tierra and Primus — names J. Caetano & Filhas as a Tier-1 apparel business partner on its published list of active suppliers (April 2026 edition), with production for the group at the 76-person Norv Tex unit. Houdini Sportswear, the Stockholm outdoor brand that manufactures only in Europe, lists J. Caetano among its Portuguese manufacturers alongside Olmac, next to partners in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Both brands sit at the premium, sustainability-led end of Scandinavian outdoor apparel, where near-shore European production is a selling point rather than a cost.
Portuguese garment makers rarely appear by name in Nordic brand communications; supplier-list transparency at Fenix and Houdini makes J. Caetano one of the few whose Scandinavian customer relationships can be verified rather than inferred. It is a working example of the sourcing shift NorthSouth HQ has tracked across Swedish and Danish fashion this year — performance and casual apparel moving to family-owned factories north of Porto — and of the Penafiel–Paredes cluster’s ability to supply technical outdoor garments, not only basics.
