Corridor footprint

Insula Vinus reached Sweden in a single step: on 16 December 2025 Systembolaget added three of its wines to the order range through the importer Vinhantverk Sverige AB, which specialises in small-producer Portuguese wine. The two varietal whites, Verdelho 2023 (art. 7678001, SEK 430) and Arinto dos Açores 2023 (art. 7820501, SEK 429), are recorded by the monopoly with the origin “Pico”; the third, Chão de Lava AA 2024 (art. 7803601, SEK 370), is a blend of Verdelho and Arinto dos Açores recorded under the broader “Açores” origin. Together they make Insula Vinus one of the very few Azorean producers with a Nordic monopoly listing.

The producer is a family project started in 2006 by Paulo Machado, a Pico-born grower, farming about 17 hectares scattered along the island’s south and west coasts. The vines grow in currais, small plots walled with black basalt against the Atlantic wind, the landscape that UNESCO inscribed in 2004; the native white grapes Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico dominate. The cellar and tasting room are at Rua dos Biscoitos 3 in São Mateus, on the south coast of the island.

Why this matters for the corridor

Volcanic-island whites at SEK 370–430 are a sommelier category rather than a supermarket one, and the order range is exactly where Systembolaget parks them: available to every store and restaurant that asks, without the volume commitment of the fixed assortment. For the Azores, whose wine exports are tiny, a listing at the Swedish monopoly is disproportionately valuable as a reference for other Nordic buyers, and it is the kind of documented footprint that qualifies a producer for the Portuguese Companies in Scandinavia directory.
