Portuguese presence in the Nordics

Impetus

Textiles

One of Portugal’s largest underwear and seamless-textile manufacturers — founded in the early 1970s in Barcelos, the group counts 12 companies, more than 1,000 employees and around 9 million pieces a year, produced entirely in Portugal. Its knitted apparel reaches the Nordics as a disclosed supplier to Norwegian outdoor brand Helly Hansen.

Corridor footprint

Impetus built its business on export from day one: the Barcelos group runs fully integrated production — weaving and knitting, dyeing, printing, finishing, cutting, sewing and packaging — across Portuguese industrial units, producing millions of pieces a year of underwear, sleepwear, sportswear and technical seamless apparel for international brands. Group materials cite 12 companies and more than 1,000 employees, with all production kept in Portugal.

The Nordic connection is documented at the customer level: Impetus appears on the published supplier list of Norwegian outdoor brand Helly Hansen, placing Barcelos-made knitwear inside one of Scandinavia’s most demanding technical-apparel supply chains. Nordic brands’ supplier-transparency lists have become one of the most reliable windows into Portugal’s quiet role as a premium textile base for the region.

Why this matters for the corridor

Impetus shows the corridor’s textile lane at industrial scale: not a label chasing spot orders, but a vertically integrated Portuguese group embedded as a named supplier to a flagship Norwegian brand. It is the kind of relationship — verifiable, technical, long-term — that anchors northern Portugal’s claim as the Nordics’ nearshore apparel workshop.
