Hästens, the Swedish luxury bed maker founded in 1852 in Köping and run by fifth-generation owner Jan Ryde, operates three Portuguese stores — Lisbon (Rua de São Bernardo 43 B), Porto and Cascais — and chose Coimbra for the world’s first Hästens Sleep Spa hotel.
Hästens sells its handmade horsehair beds — instantly recognisable in the brand’s Blue Check pattern — through a Portuguese store network covering Lisbon’s Rua de São Bernardo, Porto and Cascais, operated locally by Reil Roudes Lda according to the Swedish Embassy and Luso-Swedish Chamber (CLS) catalogue of Swedish investments in Portugal.
Portugal also hosts a global first for the Köping company: the Hästens Sleep Spa, a 15-room micro-hotel in Coimbra opened in 2021 where every room is fitted with Hästens beds — a concept the brand debuted in Portugal before anywhere else in the world.
A 170-year-old family firm from Västmanland picking Portugal both for retail and for its first hotel concept says something about the corridor’s consumer end: Portuguese affluent demand and tourism flows are now strong enough for Nordic luxury brands to run flagship experiments here.
