Grundéns, the fishing-workwear house founded in 1911 by Carl A. Grundén in the west-coast village of Grundsund, Sweden, has run a Lisbon factory since 1972 — today an ISO 9000-certified production site and product-development centre, operating locally as Grundéns Portugal Lda.
Carl A. Grundén, son of a North Sea fisherman, began producing oiled protective garments for fishermen in Grundsund in 1911; the firm was formally incorporated as Grundéns Regnkläder AB in 1926. In 1972 the company opened a factory in Lisbon — today, by the company’s own account, a modern ISO 9000-certified facility that doubles as its product-development centre, making Portugal a core manufacturing base rather than a satellite market. The local entity, Grundéns Portugal Lda, is listed in the Luso-Swedish Chamber of Commerce’s catalogue of Swedish investments.
The brand’s foul-weather bibs, jackets and waders are standard kit in commercial fishing fleets from Scandinavia to Alaska, and the company has expanded strongly into sport-fishing apparel in North America.
A Swedish brand that has quietly manufactured in Lisbon for more than five decades is among the corridor’s oldest continuous industrial links — predating Portugal’s EU accession and most of the textile cluster’s famous Nordic partnerships.
