Esporão is one of Portugal’s largest and most awarded wine estates, producing organic Alentejo wines from Herdade do Esporão in Reguengos de Monsaraz. The estate is fully certified organic across 441 ha of vineyards (~40 grape varieties) and 93 ha of olive groves, and the group exports to 58 markets including a sustained Swedish Systembolaget footprint anchored by the value-tier Monte Velho and the Esporão Reserva range.
Esporão’s Swedish presence is built around two product families that complement each other across price points. Monte Velho — launched in 1992 as a more accessible Alentejo blend — is the volume anchor on Systembolaget shelves and in restaurant by-the-glass programmes, while the Esporão Reserva range (red and white) holds the premium tier alongside the Defesa label. The group is one of the largest single Portuguese wine references in Sweden by volume of distinct SKUs, with successive vintages renewed through the Systembolaget purchase plan cycle.
Operationally, Herdade do Esporão is one of the largest single-estate organic wineries in Europe. The shift to full organic certification across the 441 ha of vineyard reflects a deliberate positioning toward Northern European retailers and on-trade buyers — particularly the Nordic monopoly markets — where sustainability claims must be auditable and certified. Beyond Sweden, Esporão also reaches Nordic consumers through the broader Systembolaget product database and through specialised Portuguese-wine importers serving Norway, Finland and Denmark.
Esporão is a useful proxy for the structural premiumisation of Portuguese wine in Nordic markets. Where Sogrape leads on volume through Mateus and the broader Sandeman portfolio, and Symington owns the premium Port category through Graham’s and Dow’s, Esporão has carved out a defensible position in still-wine premium Alentejo — a category that has grown disproportionately at Systembolaget over the past decade as Swedish consumers traded up from bag-in-box and entry-tier reds. For Nordic buyers and consumers, the Esporão brand has become almost synonymous with credible, certified-organic Alentejo wine.
