Dona Maria Vinhos

Wine

Dona Maria Vinhos is the Estremoz wine house of Júlio Bastos, heir to the Quinta do Carmo estate whose 18th-century palace was a gift from King João V. After selling his Quinta do Carmo stake in 2000, Bastos rebuilt around 73 hectares of vineyard — including 40 ha of old-vine Alicante Bouschet — and acquired the “Dona Maria” brand in 2003. The Dona Maria Tinto is listed at Norway’s Vinmonopolet (p/18653705).

Corridor footprint

The Dona Maria story runs through Quinta do Carmo, the small baroque palace outside Estremoz that King João V gave to a mistress known as “Dona Maria” in the first half of the 18th century. The Bastos family, at the property since the late 19th century, helped introduce the Alicante Bouschet grape to Portugal and pioneered barrel ageing in the Alentejo. Júlio Bastos ran Quinta do Carmo from 1986, sold his stake in 2000, and started over: he bought a neighbouring 40-hectare old-vine Alicante Bouschet vineyard descended from his former plantings and, in 2003, acquired the “Dona Maria” brand from Real Companhia Velha. Today he oversees 73 hectares of vineyard near Estremoz.

In Norway, Dona Maria Tinto carries Vinmonopolet product number 18653705 — a named monopoly listing that puts the aristocratic Alentejo house on Nordic shelves.

Why this matters for the corridor

Old-vine Alicante Bouschet is one of the Alentejo’s most distinctive exports, and Dona Maria is among its reference producers. A verifiable Vinmonopolet listing adds one of the region’s storied family houses to the roster of Portuguese producers selling through the Nordic monopoly channel.
