Corridor footprint

Corticeira Viking — Importação e Exportação, Lda is a Portuguese cork-products manufacturer based in Rio Meão, in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira (Aveiro district). It was founded in 1995 as a joint venture between Sven Åke Sandgren — a Swedish cork entrepreneur from Eslöv in southern Sweden, owner of Eslövs Korkfabrik — and the Portuguese owners of the former A. Silva cork business, formalising a Sweden–Portugal cork relationship that had begun decades earlier through the raw-cork trade.

The company began as a trader of cork goods before moving into its own manufacturing, and today produces a wide range of cork products spanning houseware, tableware, industrial items, and wine and lifestyle goods — from bowls, benches and tables to yoga blocks, mats, wallets and umbrellas. After more than 30 years it exports to roughly 37 countries, with exports representing around 90% of total sales, and its founding Swedish ownership continues to anchor a durable Scandinavian distribution channel.

Why this matters

Within the Portuguese cork industry — one of the country’s most globally recognised export sectors — Corticeira Viking stands out for the explicit Swedish-Portuguese ownership history baked into its founding. For Nordic buyers and Portuguese exporters alike it is a useful case study of how a small bilateral joint venture can turn a niche natural commodity into a long-running Scandinavian commercial relationship that still drives the business three decades on.
