Nordic presence in Portugal

Cibes Lift

Manufacturing

Cibes Lift Group is a Swedish manufacturer of low-speed, screw-driven platform and cabin lifts headquartered in Gävle, with roots going back to 1947 and a claim to having invented the modern screw-driven passenger lift. Portugal is served through Cibes Lift Ibérica SL, the Madrid-based subsidiary created to support partners and sell directly to customers across Spain and Portugal.

Corridor footprint

Cibes concentrates all manufacturing and development in its ~10,000 m² Gävle plant and distributes through a network of subsidiaries and partners across more than 50 markets. The Iberian subsidiary, Cibes Lift Ibérica SL, was established in Madrid to meet growing demand for low-speed lifts in Spain and Portugal, supporting local installation partners and selling directly to key accounts.

In Portugal the product logic is straightforward: screw-driven platform lifts need no machine room and a shallow pit, which suits the renovation-heavy Portuguese building stock — multi-storey housing without elevators, small hotels, and accessibility upgrades driven by EU accessibility requirements. Swedish-made hardware, locally installed, is the model.

Why this matters for the corridor

Accessibility retrofits are one of the quiet growth categories in Portuguese construction, and the Nordic vendors that dominate platform lifts — Cibes among them — are positioned to take a disproportionate share. Cibes’s Iberian structure shows a common Nordic pattern for the Portuguese market: a Madrid-based hub with Portugal served as an integrated Iberian territory.
