Churchill’s was founded in 1981 by Johnny Graham — a member of the Graham’s Port family who struck out on his own — and named for his wife, Caroline Churchill. It was the first independent Port shipper established in a generation, and it has built a reputation for a drier, more structured style of Port alongside still Douro wines.
The house exports roughly four-fifths of its production, and its principal markets include the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil and — on the Nordic side — Sweden. That makes Sweden a documented, named destination for Churchill’s, the kind of concrete Nordic market relationship that anchors a Portugal-to-Nordics listing in the wine category.
Portuguese Port and Douro wine reach Scandinavian consumers overwhelmingly through the Nordic state monopolies, and Sweden — one of Churchill’s main markets — is the largest of them. A premium independent house treating Sweden as a core market is a clean example of the wine corridor that carries so much of the Portugal-to-Nordics trade.
