Portuguese presence in the Nordics

Casal Sta. Maria

Wine

Casal Sta. Maria is an 18th-century estate in Colares, Sintra, whose vineyards on the slopes of the Serra de Sintra are among the westernmost in continental Europe. Baron Bodo von Bruemmer planted them when he was 96, ending about a century without wine on the property; his grandson Nicholas took over after his death. Norway’s Vinmonopolet lists its Malvasia 2025 and Pinot Noir 2024 through importer Vinely AS.

Corridor footprint

Casal Sta. Maria sits on the slopes of the Serra de Sintra above the Atlantic, in the Colares area, and markets its vines as the westernmost in continental Europe. The property had not produced wine for about 100 years when Baron Bodo von Bruemmer, born in 1911 in Courland and resident at the estate for some six decades, decided at 96 to plant a vineyard; accounts date the planting to 2006–2007, with most vines in the ground within a year. After his death at 105, his grandson Nicholas von Bruemmer, previously in private banking in Switzerland, moved to Colares to run the estate. In 2018 Observador reported 7.5 hectares of vines, with winemakers Jorge Rosa Santos and António Figueiredo making a range that runs from Sauvignon Blanc to Pinot Noir, and guided visits with tastings on offer.

In Norway, Vinmonopolet’s product data name Casal Sta. Maria as producer and Vinely AS as wholesaler for two wines active in the order range in October 2026: Casal Sta. Maria Malvasia 2025 (art. 20974501, NOK 339.90) and Casal Sta. Maria Pinot Noir 2024 (art. 20974401, NOK 449.90), with NBS Logistics AS as distributor. Vinely is a Norwegian importer that invites producers to contact it about exporting to Norway. The Malvasia carries Vinmonopolet’s sustainability tag; the Pinot Noir does not.

Why this matters for the corridor

Colares is one of Portugal’s smallest and most distinctive wine regions, and Norway has become a visible outlet for it: Vinmonopolet’s order range carries Colares wines from Casal Sta. Maria, Baías e Enseadas, Ramilo, Arenæ and Chitas, mostly at NOK 300 and above. For a small estate whose business leans heavily on wine tourism, a monopoly listing gives a fixed point of sale in a high-price Nordic market without a distributor network of its own.

Recent activity

In April 2026 Corcoran Atlantic, the Portuguese affiliate of US broker Corcoran, put the estate on the international market for €19 million. ECO reported that the sale includes the main house, a guest house, a chapel and a working winery, and that the estate receives more than 5,000 visitors a year for tastings, private events and stays. NorthSouth HQ has not seen a report of a completed sale.
