Corridor footprint

Billerud was created on 29 November 2012 through the merger of Billerud AB and Korsnäs AB, with Billerud as the formal buyer. Korsnäs’ owner, Investment Kinnevik, received SEK 3.2 billion and 25.1% of the votes in the merged company, briefly making it the largest owner. The group is headquartered in Solna and listed on Nasdaq Stockholm; Ivar Vatne is chief executive and Jan Svensson chairs the board.

Its production base is Nordic and North American: mills at Grums, Skärblacka, Frövi/Rockhammar, Gävle and Karlsborg in Sweden, Jakobstad in Finland, and Escanaba, Quinnesec and Wisconsin Rapids in the United States. There is no Portuguese production asset. Portugal is a commercial market reached through the group’s Iberian sales entity, not a manufacturing location — a distinction that matters when assessing what a Billerud listing in a corridor directory actually represents.

Why this matters for the corridor

Portugal is a significant European producer of pulp and paper in its own right through Navigator and Altri, which makes Billerud a competitor in some grades and a customer or benchmark in others. The more useful corridor read is packaging demand: Billerud’s liquid packaging board and containerboard sit in the same fibre-based substitution trend that Portuguese producers are chasing, and Nordic buyers increasingly source both from within the EU rather than from Asia.
