Barão de Vilar – Vinhos SA is a Vila Nova de Gaia port house established in 1996 by the van Zeller family — 14 generations in the Douro trade and former owners of Quinta do Noval — under a title granted in 1836 by Queen Maria II to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, first Baron of Vilar. It has shipped ports under the Barão de Vilar and Maynard’s brands since 1998. In Norway, Maynard’s Colheita 1976 (art. 20997401, NOK 2,000) entered Vinmonopolet’s order range on 2 September 2026 through importer Silenus AS.
Barão de Vilar is one of the youngest port houses in Vila Nova de Gaia and one of the oldest names in the trade. The company was set up in 1996 by Fernando Luis van Zeller, who passed his stock of aged ports to his sons Fernando and Álvaro; the van Zellers count 14 generations in the Douro wine business and previously owned Quinta do Noval, the estate behind the 1931 Nacional. The house takes its name from the title of Baron of Vilar granted in 1836 by Queen Maria II to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, which passed by inheritance through the Kopke and van Zeller families. It began selling ports under the Barão de Vilar and Maynard’s labels in 1998 and also makes Douro wines from S. João da Pesqueira and Torre de Moncorvo.
The verified Nordic channel is Norway. In Vinmonopolet’s 2 September 2026 nyhetslansering, Maynard’s Colheita 1976 — a single-harvest tawny bottled after decades in wood — entered the order range (bestillingsutvalget) at NOK 2,000 for a 75cl bottle (art. 20997401), imported by Silenus AS with distribution by Vectura. It arrived in the same window as the 2024 vintage-port declarations from Symington’s houses and the Quinta do Noval Nacional, placing a small family shipper’s colheita alongside the Douro’s largest names on the Norwegian list.
Aged colheitas and tawnies are where independent port houses can compete with the big groups in the Nordics: the monopolies’ order ranges reward rare, dated bottlings that the supermarket shelf cannot carry, and a 1976 colheita at NOK 2,000 is exactly that product. Barão de Vilar’s Norwegian listing is a reminder that the Portugal → Nordics wine flow is not only about volume Vinho Verde and Douro reds but also about the high-value, low-volume top of the port category.
