Axel Arigato is the Gothenburg fashion house founded in 2014 by Max Svärdh and Albin Johansson, known for minimalist leather sneakers and, increasingly, ready-to-wear. Its products are made primarily in Portugal, in small family-run factories in the Porto area. Paris-listed Eurazeo’s brand-investment arm took a majority stake in a €56 million deal announced in November 2020, with the founders staying in their roles, and the company reported revenue of about €77 million in 2022 — almost triple its 2017 level.
Axel Arigato started in 2014 as a direct-to-consumer sneaker label that dropped one new style a week, designed in Gothenburg and made in Portugal. That production model has not changed as the brand has grown: its footwear is handcrafted in small, family-run factories in the Porto area, the same northern Portuguese cluster that supplies most of Scandinavia’s premium shoe brands, and the company describes its products as primarily made in Portugal. Ready-to-wear and accessories have been added on top of the sneaker core.
The capital behind the brand is French. In November 2020 Eurazeo Brands, the consumer-brand arm of Paris-listed Eurazeo, took a majority stake in a €56 million transaction — its first European brand investment — with founders Max Svärdh and Albin Johansson continuing to run the company. Growth since has been rapid: Axel Arigato reported revenue of roughly €77 million in 2022, almost three times its 2017 level, on a multichannel mix of its own online store, physical stores in cities including Stockholm, Copenhagen, London and Paris, and wholesale.
For Portugal’s footwear industry, Axel Arigato is the kind of customer the sector says it wants: a fast-growing, premium-priced Nordic brand that keeps production in Portugal as it scales rather than shifting to Asia. With Portugal now Europe’s second-largest footwear producer by volume, brands like this — alongside Eytys, C.QP, Sneaky Steve and New Movements — are the demand side of a Nordic–Portuguese manufacturing relationship that rarely makes headlines but sustains thousands of jobs in Felgueiras, Guimarães and São João da Madeira.
