António Madeira is a Paris-born (1978) engineer who left a career in France to recover abandoned old vines around his grandparents’ village of Santa Marinha, in the Serra da Estrela foothills at the eastern edge of the Dão. From a first hectare bought in 2010 and a debut 2011 vintage, he now farms about 25 plots on roughly eight hectares, organically, with vines aged 50 to 120 years at 450–600 metres. In Norway his wines sit in Vinmonopolet’s order range through importer Unico Real Wines AS, with A Liberdade 2023 (art. 13926801, NOK 449.90) added in the 2 September 2026 launch.
António Madeira’s project is a return migration story. His father left Portugal for France in 1970, and António grew up in Paris, trained as an engineer and spent summers among the family’s century-old vines in the Serra da Estrela foothills. In 2010 he bought his first hectare of abandoned vineyard near Santa Marinha, restored it by hand and made a first vintage in 2011. The estate has since grown to around 25 old-vine plots across roughly eight hectares, all farmed organically, on granite slopes between 450 and 600 metres — altitude and old field-blend vines that give slow ripening and the natural acidity his wines are known for. He has set out to identify and classify the Dão’s best old parcels rather than plant new ones.
In the Nordics the route to market is Norway’s Vinmonopolet, whose order range (bestillingsutvalget) already carried four Madeira cuvées — A Centenária, A Palheira and the Vinhas Velhas Branco and Tinto. The monopoly’s 2 September 2026 launch list added a fifth, A Liberdade 2023, a 12.5 percent Dão white at NOK 449.90 (art. 13926801), through Oslo importer Unico Real Wines AS with distribution by Vectura. At that price it sits in the top tier of the 65 Portuguese order-range entries in the September window.
The terroir-driven, low-intervention segment of Portuguese wine is precisely where Nordic monopoly buyers and sommeliers have been most active, and Madeira’s Norwegian listings show the Dão’s forgotten old vines travelling north under a single grower’s name and at prices that would have been unthinkable for the region a decade ago. It is the prestige end of the same importer-led channel that carries cooperative sparkling wines and supermarket Vinho Verde into the monopolies.
