Portuguese pulp and forestry major (Celbi, Caima, Biotek mills) supplying bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp to Nordic tissue and specialty paper producers.
Altri is one of Europe’s largest producers of bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp (BEKP), operating three Portuguese mills — Celbi in Figueira da Foz, Caima in Constância and Biotek in Vilar Formoso — with combined annual capacity of around 1.1 million tonnes. Its pulp is sold globally to tissue, printing and specialty paper producers, with Northern Europe and the Nordics being a structurally important demand pool.
Finland and Sweden are home to several of the world’s largest tissue and specialty paper manufacturers — Essity (Stockholm), Metsa Tissue (Espoo), UPM and Stora Enso — all of whom procure eucalyptus pulp for tissue, decor paper and specialty grades. Altri’s Portuguese fibre mix, based on short-fibre eucalyptus globulus, is a complement to Nordic long-fibre softwood production, and BEKP from Portugal is a recurring input into Nordic tissue and decor paper lines.
Altri is one of the clearest examples of a Portuguese industrial exporter whose strategic customers are Nordic. The company’s Nordic relevance is structural rather than cyclical: Nordic tissue majors need a southern-European BEKP supply base, and Altri’s three mills plus its new Gama biorefinery project (lyocell-grade dissolving pulp for textile applications) align directly with Nordic sustainability and circular-materials agendas.
Altri has advanced its Gama biorefinery project at Caima, targeting dissolving pulp for textile applications, and has continued to supply Nordic tissue and specialty paper customers with market BEKP from its Portuguese mills.
