Finnish marine and energy group Wärtsilä employs about 50 people at its unit in Esposende, on the Minho coast north of Porto, where it works on smaller complete engines, engine components, inspection and technical assistance with round-the-clock support. The details come from Esposende’s municipal council, which took the 18th edition of its START Business Tour to the site and published an account of the visit on 28 September, reported by the regional outlets O MINHO and e24. According to the council, Wärtsilä told the visitors that orders received in the Portuguese market grew 17% last year and that its marine activity in the country increased by about €2 million.
The Esposende unit was set up to support customers in Portugal and northern Spain. Its services, as listed by the council, include technical surveys, chemical cleaning, alignments and other interventions tailored to customers, alongside specialised work on components and research. During the visit the company presented engines adapted to different fuels, hybrid solutions, digital tools for process optimisation and carbon-capture technology for shipping, citing the engine it developed from scratch in 2022 to run on methanol. The council’s account put the group at more than 190 years old, present in 79 countries, with about 17,900 employees and 2025 turnover of roughly €7 billion.
A Portuguese company since 1993
Wärtsilä dates its presence in Portugal to 1992. The local subsidiary, Wärtsilä Portugal, S.A. (NIF 502926287), was incorporated on 19 February 1993 and has its registered office at Rua Dr. Francisco Sá Carneiro 251 in Esposende, with share capital of €199,519.16. It is registered under two activity codes: manufacture of engines and turbines other than for aircraft and vehicles (CAE 28110), and repair and maintenance of machinery (CAE 33120).
The second Portuguese base, in Setúbal, is older than the subsidiary. Repropel, which Wärtsilä lists as a joint venture, started in 1971 as a partnership between Lips N.V. of the Netherlands, the propeller maker now part of Wärtsilä, and the Portuguese shipyard group Lisnave. It has a workshop and office at Lisnave’s Mitrena yard in Setúbal and another at the Navalrocha shipyard in Lisbon, and services all Wärtsilä propulsion products as well as repairing propellers of any brand.
What the public contracts show
The council’s visit describes the workshop. The EU’s procurement journal shows who the customers are. Tenders Electronic Daily lists eight contract awards to Wärtsilä Portugal since June 2024, worth €10.44 million in total, from three Portuguese public buyers: the Azores power utility EDA – Electricidade dos Açores, the Madeira utility EEM – Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira and the Portuguese Navy.

The largest single award, €4.88 million from EDA in June 2024, covered spare parts for Wärtsilä equipment at the Azorean utility, whose thermal power stations run Caterpillar/MaK, MAN and Wärtsilä engines according to a separate 2026 notice. In Madeira, EEM awarded €3.21 million in March 2026 for the design, supply, installation and testing of new engine-control hardware and software for the Wärtsilä generating sets known as CTV3 at the Central Térmica da Vitória in Funchal. The six Navy awards, worth €2.35 million together, concern two ships above all: the frigate NRP Bartolomeu Dias, whose diesel engines have been the subject of three separate contracts in under two years, and the offshore patrol vessel NRP Setúbal, one of the Viana do Castelo-class ships powered by two Wärtsilä diesel engines. In January 2026 EDA also split a spare-parts tender by engine make — Caterpillar/MaK, MAN and Wärtsilä — with Wärtsilä Portugal among the named winners of awards totalling €274,206.
Islands, frigates and an installed base
The contracts explain why the Esposende unit exists. The Azores and Madeira run island grids that depend on engine-driven power stations, and a navy that operates Wärtsilä-powered patrol vessels needs parts, inspections and emergency repairs on its own timetable. None of that business is new equipment. It is the aftermarket on engines already installed, which is where the 24-hour support, the alignments and the component work described by the council fit in. The 17% rise in Portuguese orders and the €2 million gain in marine activity reported last year sit on top of that base.
Why this matters for the corridor
Wärtsilä’s Portuguese footprint is a clear example of how a Nordic industrial group can build a durable business in Portugal without a large factory: a technical subsidiary with around 50 people, a propeller joint venture that dates back more than half a century, and a portfolio of public customers on the islands and in the Navy that renews itself through repeat parts and service contracts. It also puts a second Nordic industrial name on the Cávado coast, where Danish cable maker NKT has run the former SolidAl power-cable factory since buying it in June 2024. For Nordic suppliers looking at Portugal, the lesson is that the procurement journal is a map: EDA, EEM and the Navy publish what they buy, including by engine brand. Wärtsilä publishes its January–September interim report on 27 October.
