A British heavy-metal band is, by the numbers, one of the more effective salesmen Portuguese wine has in Sweden. On 22 September Iron Maiden and the Douro-based The Wine Collection — the Vila Nova de Gaia company of the van Zeller family, listed by Systembolaget under the producer name Van Zeller Wine Collection SA — launched Eddie’s Blend Tinto 2024, the second wine of a partnership that began in 2024. The company told Grande Consumo and Plataforma the new vintage will be sold through the band’s official store and in six export markets: the United Kingdom, Sweden, Canada, Finland, Austria and Brazil, plus Portugal, where Continente, Auchan and Apolónia will carry it at a recommended €12.99.
The launch coincides with the band’s 2026 world tour of 49 dates, which began in May and includes two Portuguese shows; the 2024 vintage carries a limited-edition label, “Wine Art #2”, built around the tour’s visual identity. The wine is a Douro blend led by Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. According to the company, the project has sold more than 600,000 bottles in 30 countries since the first release, Iron Maiden Darkest Red 2021, which was developed with the British distributor Ehrmanns Wines.
What the Swedish ledger says
Two of the six export markets are Nordic monopolies, and for one of them there is hard data. Systembolaget’s annual article-by-article sales file, which NorthSouth HQ analysed earlier this month, records Iron Maiden Darkest Red (article 7567201, producer “Van Zeller Wine Collection SA”, SEK 139 for 75 cl) at 53,932.5 litres sold in 2025 — roughly 71,900 bottles — after 31,824 litres in 2024, a year in which it was only on shelf from its launch date of 15 October. At the current shelf price, the 2025 volume corresponds to about SEK 10 million of retail turnover.
Ranked against every Portuguese red wine that sold in Sweden last year, Darkest Red is 19th of 232 articles by volume. That table is dominated by three-litre bag-in-box brands — Casa Santos Lima’s LAB Reserva (917,000 litres), Scanivinus’s GW:s Låda (852,000) and João Portugal Ramos’s Ramos Reserva (648,000) — and by glass bottles at SEK 79–109. Among the 200 Portuguese reds sold in standard 75 cl bottles, Darkest Red is seventh; it is the only 75 cl bottle in the top 20 priced above SEK 109. Portuguese red wine as a whole sold 5.15 million litres at Systembolaget in 2025.
The listing matters as much as the volume. Systembolaget’s product database shows Darkest Red in the fixed assortment (fast sortiment), the permanent range stocked across the monopoly’s stores, imported by The Wine Team Global AB. Of the 569 Portuguese products the monopoly currently lists, only 91 are in the fixed assortment — 410 are order-range items and 68 are temporary listings — so a fixed-assortment slot at SEK 139 is a scarce thing for a Douro red without a monopoly-tender history. As of 27 September the database shows no Eddie’s Blend article yet — the band’s other Swedish listings are a Robinsons Brewery ale and a rum — so the Swedish route for the new vintage is still to be confirmed.
Norway and Finland
In Norway, Vinmonopolet lists Iron Maiden Darkest Red 2024 (article 19184901) at NOK 250 in the order range (bestillingsutvalget), under the producer name Van Zeller, with Exciting Wines AS as wholesaler and Vectura as distributor. Norway is not on the company’s list of launch markets for Eddie’s Blend; Finland is, though Alko does not publish a machine-readable range and NorthSouth HQ could not verify a listing there.
Why this matters for the corridor
Portuguese wine’s structural problem in the Nordic monopolies is price position: the volume sits in bag-in-box and sub-SEK 100 bottles, and the premium Douro tier sells in small lots through the order ranges. A merchandise-driven brand has done what few producers manage — hold a SEK 139 Douro red in Systembolaget’s permanent assortment and move over 70,000 bottles a year — by borrowing an audience rather than building one. Whether Eddie’s Blend gets its own Swedish and Finnish listings, and whether the tour year lifts Darkest Red’s 2026 volume above 2025, are the two figures to watch when the next ledgers are published.
