Corridor footprint

Norsk Hydro's Portuguese footprint is concentrated in two industrial sites that together cover both upstream aluminium processing and downstream building systems. In Prior Velho, just north of Lisbon, Hydro operates an aluminium building-systems business — supplying architectural aluminium profiles, façade systems and window/door framing to the Portuguese construction sector. In Avintes, in the Vila Nova de Gaia / Porto metropolitan area, Hydro runs a manufacturing plant, a die factory and an aluminium casthouse, producing extruded aluminium components for the Iberian construction, automotive and industrial markets.

The combined Portuguese operation gives Hydro full coverage of the Iberian aluminium-extrusion value chain — from billets and casthouse output through to extruded profiles and finished façade systems. It also positions Portugal as part of the group's wider European Building Systems network alongside its larger Spanish, French and Italian footprints. Hydro's Portuguese operations are integrated into the group's broader Aluminium Metal and Extrusions divisions, supplying both internal Iberian customers and the broader European market.

Why this matters for the corridor

Hydro is one of the largest Norwegian industrial employers in Portugal and one of the country's most consistent Nordic manufacturing presences. For Portuguese construction and façade designers, Hydro's Avintes and Prior Velho footprint provides locally-stocked Nordic-spec aluminium; for Nordic capital, the Hydro footprint demonstrates the long-running viability of Portugal as a low-CO₂ base for energy-intensive aluminium manufacturing — a point that is becoming structurally more important as European aluminium policy tightens.

Why this matters for the corridor

Norsk Hydro's Aveiro operations represent significant Norwegian industrial capital in Portugal's construction sector. The company's Technal and Wicona brands serve as key suppliers to Portuguese architects and builders across residential and commercial segments.
