Norwegian Atlantic salmon giant supplying Portuguese retailers and foodservice, with Mowi-branded smoked and portioned salmon sold via leading PT supermarket chains.
Mowi is the largest producer of farmed Atlantic salmon in the world, harvesting fish primarily in Norway, Scotland, Chile, Canada, Ireland and the Faroe Islands. Its Iberian commercial footprint is anchored by Mowi Spain, a large processing and smoking plant in Baiona (Galicia) that supplies fresh, smoked, marinated and portioned salmon to both Spanish and Portuguese retailers.
In Portugal, Mowi-branded retail packs — particularly smoked salmon, salmon loins and poke-style portions — are listed across the major national grocery chains and are also present in HORECA distribution. The Baiona plant, combined with Mowi’s pan-European logistics network, makes Iberia a single commercial territory from a Mowi operational standpoint.
Portugal is one of the largest per-capita seafood consumers in Europe, and salmon has grown into a mainstream protein category alongside traditional codfish and sardines. Mowi’s Portuguese presence illustrates a common corridor pattern: a Nordic industrial champion servicing Iberia through a single Galician hub rather than a standalone Portuguese legal entity — efficient for the supplier, but meaningful volume for Portuguese retail.
Mowi has continued to invest in its value-added consumer business, and the Baiona plant remains a central node for Iberian salmon distribution, including the ramp-up of poke bowl and ready-meal SKUs that feature prominently in Portuguese supermarkets.
